The Cure are an English rock band formed in Crawley, West Sussex in 1976. The band has experienced several line-up changes, with frontman, vocalist, guitarist and principal songwriter Robert Smith being the only constant member. The band is part of the post-punk and New Wave movements that had sprung up in the wake of the punk rock revolution in the United Kingdom and is considered one of the most popular alternative rock bands in the world. The Cure were one of the first alternative bands to have chart and commercial success in an era before alternative rock had broken into the mainstream. In 1992 the NME declared The Cure had during the 1980s become "a goth hit machine (19 to date), an international phenomenon and, yep, the most successful alternative band that ever shuffled disconsolately about the earth". The band is estimated to have sold 27 million albums as of 2004.
