One of the most successful progressive-rock bands in history, Yes combined virtuosic musicianship, suitelike neoclassical structures, and three-part high vocal harmonies to form an elaborate whole that most critics called irrelevant highflown indulgence – and that audiences loved. After undergoing Byzantine personnel changes, they updated their sound in the mid-1980s and enjoyed greater commercial success than ever.
Yes was former after Jon Anderson met Chris Squire at a London music-industry bar in 1968. Anderson had spent the previous 12 years in various bands; Squire, a self-taught bassist, had been in the Syn. With guitarist Peter Banks, keyboardist Tony Kaye, and drummer Bill Bruford, they formed Yes. One of the first engagements was opening for Cream's London farewell concert in November 1968. The band won instant critical acclaim in Britain, and by the time of their debut album, which mixed originals with covers, were hailed as "the next supergroup." Time and a Word, which used an orchestra to flesh out intricately shifting arrangements, was somewhat less well received.
At this point, Yes had yet to break through in America, and Atlantic Records informed them that the next album might be their last. Banks left to form Flash, and new guitarist Steve Howe – formerly of such bands as the Syndicate and Tomorrow – helped make The Yes Album (#40, 1971) their breakthrough. With continual FM airplay it went gold.
In 1971 Tony Kaye left to form Badger (he later joined Detective and then Badfinger). His replacement, Rick Wakeman, had garnered acclaim with the Strawbs. Fragile (#4, 1972) consolidated the band's success. Highlighted by an edited "Roundabout" (#13, 1972), the album went gold. With Close to the Edge (#3, 1972), Yes' ambition attained new heights. Consisting of three extended cuts, with a four-movement title suite, the album too went gold in short order. After recording it, Bruford left to join King Crimson (whose leader, Robert Fripp, had once been approached to replace Peter Banks). His replacement was sessionman Alan White, who had played in John Lennon's Plastic Ono Band.
The live Yessongs (#13, 1973) was followed by the critically derided Tales From Topographic Oceans (#6, 1974). The album sold well, however, and the band continued to be a top-drawing live act. But Tales brought to a head conflicts between Wakeman, an extroverted meat-eating beer drinker, and the other players, who were sober vegetarians. Wakeman, openly expressing his disillusionment, soon left.
Wakeman's replacement was Patrick Moraz (like Wakeman, classically trained), of progressive-rock band Refugee. He debuted on Relayer (#5, 19740, which, like Close to the Edge, featured an extended suit and forays into jazz fusion. With the release of Yesterdays (#17, 1975), a compilation including tracks from the first two (uncharted) Yes albums, the band took a year off as each member pursued solo projects.
After Yes had made a successful world tour with Moraz, Wakeman rejoined. Both Going for the One (#8, 1977) and Tomato (#10, 1978) returned to shorter, tighter song structures. But though Yes continued to sell albums and fill arenas, its days seemed numbered. Wakeman left again, followed by Anderson, who had written most of Yes' lyrics. Trevor Horn and Geoffrey Downes of the new-wave band the Buggles (who had a hit with "Video Killed the Radio Star" [see entry]) debuted on Drama (#18, 1980). Shortly thereafter, Yes broke up.
Howe and Downes then joined with Carl Palmer of Emerson, Lake and Palmer and John Wetton to form the progressive-rock supergroup Asia [see entry], who debuted in 1982 with a massively successful album. Anderson continued to make solo albums. Squire and White planned to start a band called Cinema. But in mid-1983 Anderson, Kaye, Squire, White, and South African guitarist Trevor Rabin re-formed Yes and went on with 90125 (#5, 1983) and its Rabin-penned #1 single "Owner of a Lonely Heart," both to score the band's highest chart position and to redefine its sound. Largely due to produced Trevor Horn, Yes streamlined its approach, eschewing classical stylings for sonically gorgeous, crafty pop. Rabin's songwriting dominated The Big Generator (#15, 1987), after which Anderson quit.
By 1989 the band's personnel squabbles reached new intensity; after a court battle over the group name, Squire, White, Rabin, and Kaye continued as the official Yes, while the warring faction of Anderson, Bruford, Wakeman, and How toured and recorded using their surnames. The two camps reconciled on Union (#15, 1991), going on a world tour that, for all the logistical unwieldiness of its eight-played lineup, was a huge commercial success.
In 1993 Anderson, Bruford, and Howe joined the London Philharmonic in an album of symphonic versions of Yes songs. A year later, Yes – this time comprised of the members who'd released 90125 – announced plans to record again, and early 1994 saw the release of Talk (#33, 1994). In 1997 the band, with new guitarist Billy Sherwood and additional keyboardist Igor Khoroshev, released two albums in one month, the catchy pop of Open Your Eyes and the more typically ambitious Keys to Ascension, vol. 2. By this time, Rick Wakeman, while still pursuing a career in Christian music, was back in the Yes fold. The Ladder (1999) echoed the progressive-rock melodrama of the band's early heyday.

The Police - Special Biography
The Police's songs are unmistakable. Both canny and cosmopolitan, the British trio's sound blended pop hooks and tricky rhythms. Reggae beats here, African funk there, and on top of all the pulsing grooves, the keening wail of Sting's voice. The band, driven by Stewart Copeland's drums, Andy Summers' guitar, and Sting's bass, leapt from the punk underground to conquer the radio airwaves with 1978's "Roxanne." For the next several years they went on to create a wildly successful body of work that was both experimental and highly pop-wise. Maybe that's why they titled their most popular album Synchronicity, and maybe that's why — 30 years after they arrived on the scene — their reunion tour was one of the most celebrated rock events of 2008.
Gordon Sumner, who got his nom de fame "Sting" because of a bee-like yellow and black jersey he wore as a young musician, had been a teacher, ditch digger, and civil servant while working with several jazz combos in Newcastle, England. It was in a British jazz club that he met American drummer Stewart Copeland. The son of a swing-loving CIA agent and an archaeologist with an appreciation for classical music, Copeland had grown up in the Middle East, attended college in California, moved to England in 1975, and joined the English progressive-rock group Curved Air. When that band broke up, Copeland formed the Police with Sting and guitarist Henri Padovani in 1977. After a few months of club dates, they replaced Padovani with Andy Summers, whose list of previous employers stretched Eric Burdon and the Animals to Neil Sedaka; a bit older than his new mates, he had also studied classical guitar in California.
From the start, the band distinguished itself with maverick business practices. Before recording anything, the trio portrayed a bleached-blond punk rock band in a chewing gum commercial — a move that drew the scorn of Britain's punks. But in punk style, the group's first single, "Fall Out" (cut with Padovani) was homemade and frenzied. Released in 1978 by Illegal Records Syndicate (I.R.S.) — an independent label founded by Copeland and his brother Miles (also the group's manager) — "Fall Out" sold 70,000 copies in the U.K.
The following year the Police signed with A&M, negotiating a unique contract that awarded them a higher-than-standard royalty rate instead of a large advance. Their next unorthodox move was to tour America before releasing any records there. Through Frontier Booking International (FBI) — third brother Ian Copeland's agency — the band borrowed equipment, rented a van, and traveled cross-country to play club dates, sowing the seeds of a following that would make its first U.S. release, "Roxanne," a moderate hit (Number 32, 1979; it was already a British hit).
Both Outlandos d'Amour (1978) and Reggatta de Blanc (1979) entered the U.S. Top 30, while in the U.K. "Message in a Bottle" and "Walking on the Moon" went to the top of the singles chart. A 1980 world tour took the Police to Hong Kong, Thailand, India, Egypt, Greece, and Mexico - countries that rarely received foreign rockers. Zenyatta Mondatta (Number Five, 1980), which contained "De Do Do Do, De Da Da Da" (Number 10, 1980) and "Don't Stand So Close to Me" (Number 10, 1981), was the group's first U.S. platinum album. It was followed by a second million-seller, Ghost in the Machine (Number Two, 1981), which secured the band's position among the decade's biggest hit-makers with "Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic" (Number Three, 1981).
Meanwhile, the three musicians worked on various outside projects. Sting embarked on a film career, acting in Quadrophenia (1979), Radio On (1979), and Brimstone and Treacle (1982), which he also scored. Sting also performed solo in The Secret Policeman's Other Ball (1982). Summers collaborated with Robert Fripp on two albums. Copeland recorded with Peter Gabriel, released a solo EP as Klark Kent, and composed the soundtrack for Francis Ford Coppola's movie Rumble Fish (1983).
The three regrouped for 1983's chart-topping Synchronicity, which spawned the monster hit "Every Breath You Take" (Number One, 1983), as well as "Synchronicity II" (Number 16, 1983), "King of Pain," (Number Three, 1983), and "Wrapped Around Your Finger" (Number Eight, 1984). After a triumphant world tour, it was announced that the Police would take a "sabbatical" to devote time to individual pursuits; but in 1985, as Sting released a successful solo album and started touring with a new band, it became clear that the singer had no plans to reunite with Copeland and Summers. In later years, interviews revealed a playful but real tension between Sting and Copeland, causing speculation that their relationship played a part in the group's demise.
Still, fans were hopeful when the group played together at several shows on Amnesty International's Conspiracy of Hope Tour in 1986. That year also brought a Police greatest hits compilation that was supposed to include new tracks but didn't, largely because Sting wouldn't write any. Instead the trio included "Don't Stand So Close to Me '86," a subpar new version of the original hit, which peaked at Number 46. (Several remixes were intended, but a freak polo accident prevented Copeland from drumming.) It was the Police's last recording to date. The trio re-formed in front of an exclusive audience to play at Sting's wedding to Trudie Styler in 1992 and sat for its first joint interview in 15 years in 1999. The group was the subject of a few tribute albums — two reggae and one rock en Español — in the late Nineties. Meanwhile, Sting lent his most famous Police compositions, "Every Breath You Take" and "Roxanne," to rap producer/mogul Sean Combs for sampling and a remix, respectively, in 1997. In 2003 they were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, where they took the stage for a spin through "Message In a Bottle."
The commercial victories enjoyed by Copeland and Summers have been much more modest than those of Sting, whose released a string of highly successful albums throughout the 1990s and 2000s. In 1985 Copeland released The Rhythmatist, an album documenting his experiments collaborating with African folk percussionists. More film scores followed, as well: Oliver Stone's Wall Street and Talk Radio and numerous others. The drummer also composed themes for television series, including The Equalizer (an instrumental album called The Equalizer and Other Cliff Hangers was released in 1988; it is now out of print), and released two albums with another rock band, Animal Logic, formed with jazz bassist Stanley Clarke and singer Deborah Holland. Then, after composing King Lear for the San Francisco Ballet, he presented his first opera, Holy Blood and Crescent Moon, in 1989; a second, Horse Opera, followed in 1993, with a mini-opera based on the Edgar Allan Poe short story "The Cask of Amontillado" presented in 1994. Also that year, Copeland coordinated a tour of international percussion groups. Copeland is responsible for the eclectic, atmospheric music featured in the best-selling Spyro the Dragon videogame series.
Summers' post-Police career, while less varied, has been distinguished by adventurous rock, jazz, and fusion albums, both alone and in collaboration with such respected musicians as Fripp and British jazz guitarist John Etheridge. His 1999 solo release Green Chimneys: The Music of Thelonious Monk featured Sting on vocals of the track "Round Midnight." Also in 1999, Summers participated in a cross-cultural songwriting exchange workshop in Cuba.
Twenty years after their 1986 split the band reunited for a world tour which had symbolic kick-off at the 2007 Grammys ceremonies. Henry Padovani even joined them during a Paris date later in the year. But longevity wasn't part of the plan. Sting told fans that once the tour was completed the band would never record or tour again, and on August 7, 2008 at Madison Square Garden, the trio gave its final performance, donating the proceeds to local NPR television stations. The trek was the third highest-grossing rock tour ever, taking in over $350 million dollars.

King Crimson - Special Biography
The eerie, portentous sound of early King Crimson set the tone for British art rock. But by the time the group's Melotron-heavy sound and psychedelic lyrics had turned into lucrative clichés, leader Robert Fripp had long since shifted the group's style toward music that was far more eccentric, complex, and dissonant.
The original Crimson's roots when back to 1967, when the Bournemouth trio Giles, Giles and Fripp began making whimsical pop, which resulted in one British-only album in 1968 called The Cheerful Insanity of Giles, Giles and Fripp. (For a short time Judy Dyble, early Fairport Convention vocalist, also sang with them.) The band broke up in November 1968, and while bassist Peter Giles went on to become a solicitor's clerk, Fripp and drummer Mike Giles formed Crimson with ex-Gods bassist Greg Lake and their old associate Ian McDonald, who introduced them to lyricist Pete Sinfield. Sinfield also work the band's psychedelic light show.
Crimson made its debut at the London Speakeasy on April 9, 1969, and on July 5 the group played to 650,000 people at the Rolling Stones' free Hyde Park concert. In October In the Court of the Crimson King, with music by McDonald and Fripp, was released, and endorsed by Pete Townshend as "an uncanny masterpiece." But the group soon began an endless series of personnel changes, with only Fripp remaining through it all. On the band's debut U.S. tour, Giles and McDonald left, the latter in a band-control squabble. The two recorded a Crimson sound-alike album, McDonald and Giles, in 1970. During the sessions for Crimson's second album, Greg Lake also left, to form Emerson, Lake and Palmer. He'd met Emerson, then with the Nice, during Crimson's disastrous U.S. tour. Crimson might have ended there if Fripp had accepted offers to replace Pete Banks in Yes or to join Aynsley Dunbar in Blue Whale. Instead he brought in Gordon Haskell to complete the vocals on the second album (Elton John had also tried out), got old friend Pete Giles for a brief stint on bass, persuaded brother Mike to do "guest drumming," and pulled in some other friends, including future member Mel Collins, to finish it up. Fripp's guitar style was already distinctive; he used classical-guitar technique to create angular, sustained, screaming phrases on his Gibson, and he usually performed seated.
In late 1970 Fripp formed a new Crimson with Collins, Haskell, Sinfield, and drummer Andrew McCulloch (later of Greenslade). Jon Anderson of Yes did a guest vocal on the resulting Lizard. Two days after the album was finished, the band fell apart. One vocalist who tried out for the next Crimson was Roxy Myusic's Bryan Ferry, but Fripp opted for singer Boz Burrell, whom he taught to play bass. The band, rounded out by Collins and drummer Ian Wallce, recorded the subdued Islands in 1971 and, like the first group, fell apart on its U.S. tour. (Burrell later joined Bad Company.) Even the long-standing Pete Sinfield left this time; he recorded a solo LP and produced the debut Roxy Music album. The Islands-period band did manage to release a poorly recorded live document of its U.S. tour, Earthbound, released in the U.K. only.
Fripp emerged in 1972 with his most forward-looking and brashest Crimson, including Bill Bruford (who left the far more successful Yes to join), John Wetton (of Family), new lyricist Robert Palmer-Jones, David Cross, and Jamie Muir (who left for a Buddhist monastery after Larks' Tongues in Aspic). This lineup specialized in brainy, Gothic metal and jagged, dissonant free improvisation, and drew critical comparisons to Captain Beefheart's Magic Band and, thanks to Cross' electric violin, the Mahavishnu Orchestra. Cross also left after the followup, Starless and Bible Black, but he did play with the band until its last tour, culminating in a final show in New York's Central Park on July 1, 1974. A live LP from that date and Red, recorded with Cross as a "guest" member in late summer 1974, were both released after the disbanding. Ian MacDonald was about the rejoin the band and did play on Red (he joined Foreigner in 1976).
But as artistically successful as Red was, Fripp came to hate the entire art-rock movement (which was at its commercial peak, along with the mechanics of the music business itself (which he termed "vampiric"), and so he officially ended the band on September 28. On October 18, 1974. Fripp stated, "King Crimson is completely over. For ever and ever."
Fripp decided to work as a "small, mobile, intelligent, self-sufficient unit," in contrast to the overgrown "dinosaur" bands he'd come to loathe. Using the echo-delay tape system devised by Brian Eno for 1973's No Pussyfooting, which he dubbed Frippertronics," Fripp played solo concerts, slowly building minimalist chords with the notes on tape. He produced and played on Daryl Hall's first solo album, Sacred Songs, and two albums by the Roches, and added guitar lines to albums by Eno, David Bowie, Peter Gabriel, Talking Heads, and Blondie. In 1980 he returned to a group performing with the short-lived League of Gentlemen (the name of one of Fripp's earliest amateur bands), which also featured former XTC keyboardist Barry Andrews, and which added a danceable rock beat to Fripp's intricate, repeating guitar lines; League bassist Sara Lee went on to join Gang of Four.
In 1981 Fripp revived King Crimson as a quartet that he had been planning to call Discipline, including session bassist Tony Levin (who had toured with peter Gabriel), guitarist Adrian Belew (ex-Zappa, ex-Bowie, ex-Talking Heads), and Bruford. The new band drew on minimalism, African and Far Eastern polyrhythms, and the angularity of the final Crimson of the '70s. The group toured the U.S. and Europe to wide acclaim, but disbanded after recording its third album, Three of a Perfect Pair.
In 1994 Fripp – after recording and touring the previous year with ex-Japan vocalist David Sylvian – announced yet another re-formation of King Crimson. Calling the new lineup a double trio, he enlisted two drummers, Brufod and David Sylvian's drummer Pat Mastelotto. Also in the band: Belew, Levin, and Chapman Stick (a 12-string instrument combining elements of bass and guitar) player Trey Gunn (who'd been a student in one of Fripp's "Guitar Craft" seminars, and had played on the 1991 album Kneeling at the Shrine by Fripp and his wife Toyah Wilcox's band, Sunday All Over The World). This lineup debuted with the EP, VROOOM, on Fripp's own independent Discipline Records.
In 1997, after extensive touring for Thrak, the band "fractualized" (as Fripp put it) into four subgroups called "Projekcts," which were recorded on Deception of the Thrush and The ProjeKcts; the techno-groove-jam Projekct 2 (Fripp, Gunn, and Belew on electronic drums only) also released its own Space Groove album on Discipline. Partly to counter bootleggers, Fripp released a steady stream of new and old Crimson live recordings: Epitaph featured the original 1969 lineup, Night Watch the 1972-74 edition, and Cirkus collected live recordings spanning the band's entire career (he also released "Collectors Club" concert recordings of lineups throughout Crimson history, by mail-order only, through the Discipline Web site). With Bruford and Levin sitting out [see Bruford entry], Crimson returned as a quartet on ConstruKCtion of Light.
